The Pearl of Aegean : Izmir

Turkey’s one of the most modern cities of Izmir, which carries the distinction of being the third largest city, has also developed and distinction of being one of the busiest cities in terms of commercial activities. It has grown rapidly since 1945 and has a large industrial economy and a growing tourist trade.

Izmir is located on the Aegean coast, in western Turkey. On the west side it meets the sea, enclosing the Gulf of Izmir.

The closest towns to Izmir City are Alacati, 72 kilometres east, Cesme, 85 kilometres to the west, Foca, 70 kilometres to the northwest, and Kusadasi, 109 kilometres south.

Izmir Adnan Menderes International Airport is ten kilometres south of the city, and offers some direct flights from the UK, although in the winter months you may need to travel via Istanbul.

The area boasts some beautiful beaches and breezes suitable for sail sports. The climate is mild in the winter, and reaches over thirty degrees in the summer.

Almost four million people live in the area, which is rich in diversity. From Izmir City's youthful buzz, to breezy Alacati, to Foca's Mediterranean seals and Kusadasi's camel wrestling, there is something suitable for anyone dreaming of a Mediterranean lifestyle.

Alaçatı

Alaçatı is a part of İzmir on the Western coast of Turkey, often noted for its architecture, vineyards, windmills, and sea.

Alaçatı is one of the most traditional towns in Turkey, with stone houses, narrow streets, boutique hotels and restaurants with tables on the streets. The area is also home to the Alaçatı yacht marina and the famous Port Alaçatı development, created by the French architect Francois Spoerry and his son, Yves Spoerry.

Çeşme is a charming holiday resort with healing hot waters, sand and sun. Çeşme is located at the very end of the peninsula bearing its name, on 85 km west of Izmir. It was named as a small harbor by sailors.

Foça

Foça, known as Phokaia in ancient times, is a cute little town on the Aegean Sea, 70 kilometers (43 miles) north of Izmir. It's populations is around 30 thousand but in the summer time it goes up to 70 thousand with local and foreign holiday makers who prefer this area for its natural beauties, crystal clear water, small coves, and the climate. Some of Foca's bays are rewarded with the Blue Flag, securing the clean waters of an area in the Mediterranean and Aegean seas.

Kuşadası/Ephesus

Kusadasi, which means "bird island" in Turkish, is set in a superb gulf in the Aegean region of Turkey and is known for its turquoise sparkling water of the Aegean Sea, broad sandy beaches, bright sun and large marina with a capacity for 600 boats. A glorious ancient city stands beside it, Ephesus with millions of visitors from tours each year. The town is only 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Adnan Menderes Airport in Izmir.
